Traditional Calligraphy – the Uncial (Celtic) Hand
Taught following traditional methodology, in this course returning or aspiring calligraphers will use the Uncial Hand, a majuscule (solely capital letters) round-form and rhythmic script commonly used from the 4th to the 8th centuries AD by Latin and Greek scribes. A derivative of Uncial was used for the famous Book of Kells (c800 AD). Time-permitting, we may spend one session learning Celtic knotwork design, and another exploring the decorative interwoven momogram illuminations.
Material: for initial sessions, materials will be available in class. A full list of materials (paper pads, calligraphy markers and pen) will be provided for students to purchase on their own. Please bring a pocket folder in which to store weekly reference sheets.
