Traditional Calligraphy – Rustic Hand

In this course – taught following traditional methodology – returning or aspiring calligraphers will learn the Rustic Hand, sometimes referred to as Rustic Capitals. A majuscule script (meaning only upper case letters), Rustic is a robust, dynamic calligraphy alphabet. One of the oldest scripts known for its high impact, the letters are tall and thin to save space, often written in quick strokes with a wide flat brush. Living in ancient Rome, you would have seen announcements, information or even rude messages written in Rustic Capitals all around the city, in much the same way as advertising posters or graffiti of today. This hand can even be spotted on Pompeian walls!

For initial sessions, materials will be available in class. A full list of materials will be provided for students to purchase on their own. Materials; Paper pads, calligraphy markers or pen, or brushes and liquid ink for the brave among us. Please bring a pocket folder in which to store weekly reference sheets.
