Italic, or Chancery Cursive, was the handwriting of Renaissance scribes, its graceful arching forms reflecting the architecture of the time. Today, Italic calligraphy is frequesntly used for invitationbs, envelopes, place cards, or in decorative art pieces. In this class, students will learn this elegant alphabet following a step-by-step approach which will cover the basic strokes that create the letters, both miniscules (lower-case letters) and majuscules (capitals). We will also discuss spacing, layout, and will work to design a small final piece – perhaps your favorite quote! Time-permitting, we may also cover flourishing, which embellishes the writing by adding sweeping curves, spirals, loops and other decorative strokes.
