Film: New York, New York Mon PM

Each year I make up a list of semester titles I’d like to teach and then think of individual movies that would fit. New York keeps coming out on the bottom, but it’s always there winking at me. You see, there are just so many movies that take place in, or are about, New York. Some are historically important, but would bore your socks off, others have nothing to do with reality, and would bore your socks off, and don’t get me started on the musicals. I think I’ve managed to cut through the celluloid jungle and come up with 18 good titles and will choose from them. I don’t expect a trip to Coney Island and we won’t stop at a hot dog wagon. We will, however, have ‘Dinner at Eight’ with Jean Harlow, both Barrymores, Billie Burke (!), and Marie Dressler. Quite a meal.
