Birds in Altered Landscapes – Colored Pencil Drawing

Riding on the coat-tails of Cheryl Medow and Jeff Sullivan (photographers), but working with colored pencils instead of a camera lens, and with creativity running wild (or amok), we will draw ‘altered habitat’ scenes (imagined, invented, theoretical) of distinctive larger birds (cranes, herons, flamingos, etc.) against dramatic backdrops in which they would not typically be found. Emphasis will be placed on composition, and on the process of drawing landscapes using colored pencils.

Materials to start: 9′ x 12 pad of Canson XL Mixed Media white paper – or similar; mechanical pencil for sketching out ideas; set of colored pencils (wax-based and/or watercolor pencils); handheld pencil sharpener; pocket folder for storing reference sheet hand-outs.
