Contemporary Art (Art from the 1960s to Present)

Contemporary art is the art of ‘today,’ but what makes it truly ‘comtemporary?’ While many art historians contend that Contemporary art refers to art produced by artists who are alive today, others consider the late 1960s or early 1970s (the end of Modernism) as its beginning. This course will cover key experimental movements of the 1960s to present and explore the way in which contemporary artists look to past traditions to invent new and, often, controversial ways of making meaning in the work they produce.
