Inspired by fictional worlds in literature (or film) i.e. Tolkien's Middle Earth/Midgaard, King Arthur's Camelot, C.S. Lewis' Narnia, Lovecraft's Dreamlands, and using the elements, styles and artistic techniques of olde world cartography, students will be invited to unleash their imaginations to design and produce a color map of their own unique and mythical realm, kingdom or empire! Think sea-dragons and labyrinths. (Companion course to 'Art of Cartography')
02:00 pm - 03:00 pm
Open to intermediate and advanced artists.
Hatching (single-directional parallel lines) and cross hatching (two or more sets of intersecting parallel lines) are drawing techniques that utilize closely spaced lines to create depth, definition, shading and avant-garde effects. As different colored lines cross over each other, the layering creates enhanced or alternative tones, and more intense hues. Value is manipulated by the frequency and spacing of the crossing lines. Students who have them should bring their own colored pencil sets.
Class will not meet October 4 or 11.
12:30 pm - 02:30 pm
Hyperrealism displays a layer of vision that may otherwise remain unseen. Whether we view this technical drawing genre as true art or a skill, hyperrealism teaches us close observation of the tiniest details of objects, textures, surfaces, shadows and lighting effects, all of which are applicable to any other art form.
During this class, we will cover drawing of the following distinctive categories: Glass (vessels, marbles), metal objects (chrome, pewter), water droplets, distortion and refraction (dew on flowers, submerged pebbles), assorted objects of choice - including their surface reflections and shadows. We will work with graphite pencils as well as colored pencils. Students who have them should bring their own colored pencil sets.
Class will not meet October 14.
09:30 am - 11:30 am
In this unstructured class, students work each week from a live model. During the last half hour of class, peers will critique each other's work. Class members organize the models and at the first class will collect a model fee based on the number of students in the group.

Linear perspective is a mathematical system used to create the illusion of space and distance on a flat surface. Renaissance architects, Brunelleschi and Alberti in particular, studied perspective, after which nearly every artist in Italy, including Donatello and Raphael, began incorporating the mathematical principles in their paintings.
The first few sessions of this course will focus on basic one- and two-point perspective of shapes, objects and structures (buildings). Following sessions will turn to drawing of architectural elements such as tracery windows (ornately-carved Gothic stonework mullions; think cathedrals!), which students will be encouraged to draw on toned paper and then shade using black and white Prismacolor pencils to create a three-dimensional effect (think Da Vinci drapery).
Class will not meet October 14.
01:30 pm - 03:30 pm
